Custom Menus and PagesFront Page

From the Main Administration page, click on the Custom Menus/Pages icon

You should then be presented with a screen similar to the shown below.
The head part of the page will remain constant so you can always go back by clicking on
Main

Similar to the News story front page, you should see a list of all the custom pages and menus that you have created with a facility to edit or delete

In this case, as we have not created any Custom pages or menus it will simply report "no pages defined yet"

On the right you can see the menu.
with the choices of,
Front page
Create Page
Create Menu
Options.

For now I would leave the options as they are.

Note: The difference between a custom page and a custom menu is covered in the site content overview.

Custom Menus and PagesCreate Custom Menu

When you click on the “ Menu” option from the right hand Menu, you will bring up a screen similar to the one pictured below.

To create a new menu, type in the title name of your new menu into the Menu Name box.
This name is used in the menu layout screen and won't be seen on the live pages.

Next type in the Title or Caption of your menu. For example this menu might list a number of contacts so you title or caption would say Contacts.
Alternativley you can leave this blank. This will produce a menu with no title on the site which can be useful if you are using an image which contains the title

Next you type in the content of your menu into the text box and use the WYSIWYG editor, to format your text and layout.

If you want to use images in your menu you must upload them first.
Click the browse button, locate the image or images you want to use and then click "Upload Files"
If you require more than one image then click on the "Add Another File" button and locate the next image.

Once these images have been uploaded you can insert them into your text area using the button on the editor. This will bring up the Insert / Images popup box.

Change the library to "Custom images" in the drop down box at the top.
Allow the image list to reload and then you will be able to select the images you have previously uploaded.

Selecting a picture will bring up a small version of the selected image on the right.
Below you will see the web address of the selected image and the file name.

Under this is “Text Flow”. This essentially sets the picture left or right of your page.

Beneath the file size box you can adjust the picture size. The size indicated is the actual size of the image.
Just type in one of the boxes if you want to retain the same ratio of height / width.

My tip is to make newspost images about 200 wide if the image is there just to complement the Story or 450 if the image is to be the centerpiece.
The next box controls the border which I usually leave at 0.
However I usually give a margin of 2 or 3 round the image.

Once you are happy with your menu click on the Create Menu Button

Custom Menus and PagesCreate Custom Page

To create a custom page select the Create Page option on the right hand menu.

Custom Pages are really sesigned for static information.

First type in a title for your page.

Now you can enter your story into the text box .

At the top of the body area or text box, you can see the buttons of the WYSIWYG editor.
Those familiar with the forums will recognise this.

The best results come from typing directly into the box, using the editors features to format your story as you go.
You can paste from Word or similar BUT the formatting will probably not remain when you come to save.
This is because whatever you type has to be converted to html language so it can be displayed on a webpage.

One way round this problem is to disable the WYSIWYG editor, which is dicussed in News Preferences.
This stops the online editor trying to re-format an already formatted document before it attempts to convert it to HTML..... (you really don’t want to know!) just try turning off the WYSIWYG if you have a problem, you can always turn it back on after you have done your story.

The other trick is to right click on the body which will bring up a list of all your editing and formatting options.

For those who would like to see and even edit the HTML directly, click on “HTML” at the bottom left of the editor. This will bring up a pop up screen with what your story looks like in HTML, not a pretty sight!

If you want to include images into your page please see this earlier section

Once you are happy with your page you can move on to the options lowerdown your page.
There are little radio buttons to turn on and off "Rating", "Comments" and "Author information"
I tend to leave these turned off but it is your choice.

Next there is a facility to make the page protected by a password.
If you want to protect the page simply enter a password into the box.
Vistors to the page will be asked to enter the password before they can view the page.

On your front page you will have a number of site links, such as Home, Forum, Contacts etc.
If you would like to include a link to your ne page on this list just enter the name of your link into the box.

The last dropdown box is so you can select which Class is allowed to view your page.
In the example on the right there are five options including "No one" which makes the page invisable to all but allows you to re-activate it in the future.

Finally when you have finished click on "Create Page"
